Black & Blue and the High Desert Duathlon

Last night was the annual "Black and Blue Bowl"... Highland v Poky in football. The game was scheduled to start at 8:45pm... but we actually didn't have kickoff until 9:27pm. That made for a long night....and an early morning! By the way, my Rams won 17-6.

The morning came early because of the High Desert Duathlon. This was the race I've been looking forward to because I really want to do an Olympic triathlon to start next summer off, and this one was that - minus the swim. The swim doesn't scare me a bit, but running 10K on top of a 24 mile bike might be a bit of a task for this chic!

It was a tad chilly at the start - and pretty windy. The race order was 3.1 mile run, then 24 mile bike, then 3.1 mile run again. The first run went well. I think I finished in just over 23 minutes - a personal best for 3.1 miles. I felt good about it because it was pretty windy! The wind played much more into play on the bike! I was pretty spent (legs) for the first 6 miles on the bike, and the wind didn't help matters much. I chugged along... passed a couple girls at the turnaround and cruised home. On the way out, there were times I was struggling to maintain 10-12 mph! The wind and the hills were a chore. But on the return trip, I was holding 22-24 mph with a top speed of 34, so that was much more enjoyable! The second run was a challenge... I felt okay cardiovascularly but my legs were really fatigued. I combo'd run/walk through the whole thing. One gal passed me but I managed to hold the rest off with my pattern approach! Ha! I finished in 2:18 - three minutes off the goal time I set for myself. I won my age group - but was 20 minutes behind the top female (a STUD from Idaho Falls that wins EVERYTHING she enters!). My time was a bit of a bummer - but it was because I was walking so darn much! Still, the run plagues me! But, I gained confidence that I can do that Olympic length tri next summer! I'll continue to work on the run - especially after the bike - over the winter.

Time to go to bed. Out again!

Howdy - sounds like a nice time! I DID blow through Pocatello this past summer on the way home from Oregon. Seemed like parts of it were nice, but I couldn't find my way out of down town; all but one of the one-way streets leading OUT were closed. Also, I had difficulty finding a bookstore. We enjoyed the "Java Hut". See ya!
